Jesus Christ, this shit takes a long time. Revisions. More revisions. Edits. New endings. For gods sake, isn’t there an easier way?

Idea for an easier way
[Writing a trilogy] takes a long time. Revisions. More revisions. Edits. New endings. For gods sake, isn’t there an easier way?

You want to be a writer, so the problem isn't that you spent time writing or revising. The problem is that the year you mentioned was between the time you did the writing and the time you might get paid. Surely it also took quite some time between starting the work and finishing the work, and more lag between selling it and getting paid for it, and that's all part of the same problem.

Another problem is the risk. You have to spend multiple years working on something like this before you know whether anyone wants to read it.

Have you considered schemes for publishing things serially? The chapters in Stross's Accelerando were sold separately, and many webcomics somehow get paid for writing weekly chunks.

(I'm posting this because you asked for an easier way, I like your Twenty Palaces series, and I had an idea. I'm not posting because I crave conversation. If you're busy, it's fine with me if you ignore me.)

Re: Idea for an easier way
Tim, thanks for the kind words.

I've looked into doing this, especially seeing the way Lawrence Watt-Evans continued his Ethshar series through pay-by-donation serials.

Unfortunately, the way I revise requires me to have a finished book before I start releasing work to the public. My first drafts are pretty messy.
