I always, always screw up the start of my novels. I think maybe KING KHAN was the only one where I didn't throw out an initial attempt, but that was because I was following a careful outline. I have the same problem with short fiction, too.
Anyway, before I wrote the version of Child of Fire that sold, I made a conscious effort to study and analyze the way writers open their stories. I think it's instructive.
A couple of weeks back, I posted a similar link to a Fantasy Writer community on G+. I have no idea if people followed that link.
