Ads for The Great Way (asking a favor)

Sales of The Great Way trilogy have lagged pretty significantly, and while I’m working on my new project, I thought it would make sense to do some advertising.

Buying book ads isn’t the usual thing, but I keep hearing that it does well for other self-publishers, and I’m not averse to spend a little money as long as I make back more than I spent. However, before I put anything online, I thought I’d ask for feedback on the ads themselves as well as the landing page.

My son made these ads as part of a homeschool project. He’s fourteen. Please be gentle.

"leaderboard" layout

Ad number one

"banner" layout

Ad number two

"Skyscraper" layout

Ad number three

I know there’s not a lot of data there, just images and a little text, but it’s supposed to be intriguing enough to entice a click. Readers who go for the ad will arrive at this landing page. Input on that page would also be most welcome.

I’m planning to run them through Project Wonderful, probably at the forums for OOTS. I’m not sure where else. It depends on how things go. I’m told Facebook is a useful ad space, but I’m not in a hurry to go there.

Comments on this blog are usually turned off, but I’ve tried to turn them on for this post. WordPress can be cranky about this stuff, though, so if you find you can’t (or don’t want to) offer your comments below, you can tweet them at me @byharryconnolly or post them to my LiveJournal, Facebook, or Google plus pages. If you’re old school (or prefer privacy) you can email me at harryconnolly at sff dot net.

Thanks for your help.

My main suggestion would be to stay away from the Kells/Meath typefaces and go for something more Roman (clean letterforms such as found on Roman ruins). Recommendations: Trajan Pro, Serlio

Slightly more flexible typefaces that run close enough to theme: Horley Oldstyle, Delphin, Aldus, Arno Pro, Bembo, Diotima LT, Venetian 301

These would be more appropriate to the book and somewhat less, er, redolent of self-publishing.

Designwise in overall layout, I like these.

Also, I trust there will be a "how well this experiment worked" post following up?

Of the suggested fonts, I only own Trajan Pro and Arno Pro. The boy has many that I don't, so it's possible he has other options. I like Trajan Pro, though.

Thanks very much.

Trajan Pro is one of my faves. Gets a workout on anything I do with Ancient Rome.

Adobe Caslon Pro also works.

I tend to skim right past ads, but number three did catch my eye. It was the text that did it, then the surrounding images.

I will not be buying these... because I already bought them all when they first came out. And praised them highly to my friends. And have re-read them three times.

Have been hoping for sequel to show us how they all are doing as they recover from the events of the trilogy, considering there will be massive political / social upheaval lasting for years. Centuries.

(Was positive you were setting up *spoiler* for 'redemption of spoiled brat into his people's savior' arc and rather surprised at what happened instead. Curious whether *spoiler* was ever among the recovered, but I suppose we shall never know. So messy, just like real life.)
