"Revisiting Joanna Russ" is depressing. I don't want to bother wading through all the comments or opening an account to add my own, but I felt several flashes of sympathy at incidents in my own history.

In particular, the item about people always addressing the male half of a male/female pair. My wife and I encountered this with a doctor back in 1983 -- she ignored my wife and spoke only to me, no matter whose question she was answering.

And the kicker is that she was an obstetrician. Pointing out that Julie was the one who was pregnant didn't help.

So we went elsewhere, and our kids were delivered by a very old-fashioned male obstetrician who properly treated Julie as the patient and me as an observer.

I thought it was super-depressing, too. Decency shouldn't be so hard for people.
