That train trip I have been talking about?

It’s only four days until my big train trip across the country. Already! Time, it flies. My son and I have been pretty excited about the trip, and I’ve been kicking myself that I didn’t take the train more often. Yeah, it takes longer, but if the journey is part of the pleasure of the trip, you’re not losing out.

We also have a Superliner Roomette reserved. It’s a room of our own, for those times when an 8yo gets to feeling kinda crazy and would drive the other passengers crazy. Also, my son is a night owl, and is brimming with energy at the end of the day[1]. Better for him to have a little place for his craziness.

And we knew it would be small. I mean, we knew. We saw the dimensions right there on the site linked above (although they had a different flash applet to show the roomette’s features.

Then we saw this video.[2]

Holy crap, that’s small. Especially for a two-day trip with a kid who spends most evenings practicing “Chairkour.”[3]

Erm, maybe we won’t be spending all that much time in there after all. However, on the trip back, I’ll be spending two days in one of those, with no kid, no internet, no nothing, except my books, my work in progress, and the passing view of the country. Heaven!

We’ll see how well I hold up.

[1] No, we haven’t murdered him for it, but it’s been close.

[3] An indoor apartment version of parkour, ‘natch.

So many people have told me that they took train trips with their families when they were young, and that they loved them. Truly happy memories.

Depending on how well this goes over, I'm hoping for more train vacations. :)

We're planning to do the Superliner Bedroom across country when we head out.

That thing is awesome, especially as you get your own toilet and shower.

So smart. It's such a nice way to travel.

Of course, it's been twenty-one years since my last cross-country train trip. I hope they haven't added obstacle courses or group sing-alongs or something.

I know you didn't ask for it, but here is my advice: pack most of your stuff in big suitcases, but leave those down in the storage thing below, and in the roomette, only have enough stuff for the actual trip, so you won't be trying to fit yourselves around it during the journey.

I've found that an overnight case with toiletries and two sets of clothes plus all my fun stuff has made the journey a ton easier.

That's the plan, although I don't think I have a carryon big enough for our stuff and my laptop. We may have to go with two.

The Amtrak site suggests we lock our luggage, and we ditched our luggage locks years ago. I'm not even sure where we could shop for some, except a luggage store, I guess?

I've never had a lock on my suitcases. I kept valuables with me, and no one ever went through my clothes in my suitcase (or if they did, they left them utterly undisturbed.)

I've got this small roller in which my laptop fits, with a pouch for books and papers, and I can just get two changes of clothes and toiletries in it. It fits right under the seats, out of the way, because those roomettes are SMALL.

My main concern is with Xmas presents. If someone snatches them, they can be replaced, but not before the holiday.

As long as they don't make trains just as much of a hassle, I'm happy with it.

Oh yeah. Like the lawyers who get obvious really venal criminals off because it makes their success rate look good. But those are not the ones I am referring to in meaning well. These guys are mixed…

This reminds me of the time my wife was injured and the insurance guy handling her case did everything possible to deny and stall the payment. We had to put her surgery on a credit card because this…

The creepiest part is that some of them are actually well meaning.

Yeah. It's godawful what people will do when they have authority and no fear about using it.
